The 1980s ASP Pro Surf Tour was filled with many memorable characters to say the least, and Brad Gerlach was one of the best. His iconic style and brash in-your-face persona took him to the runner-up spot in the 1991 rankings. The next year he walked away from the tour to pursue a deeper surfing experience.
He was arguably the first “free-surfer,” traveling the world chasing perfect waves while still being paid by his sponsors. Over his career he has created a new contest format called “The Game,” rode the largest waves on the planet at The Cortes Bank and is now one of the highest regarded surf coaches in the world today.
We are honored to catch up with this San Diego legend today on Birds Word.
