Big Wave Tour Jaws Challenge

Earlier today, the 2018 JAWS Challenge at Peahi, Maui, was put on hold by the World Surf League Big Wave Tour because of monstrous waves. After a death-defying first heat producing waves upwards of 45 feet, “the #JawsChallenge has been called off for the day due to the increasing size and wind,” the WSL tweeted.
The #JawsChallenge has been called off for the day due to the increasing size and wind. BUT if there is a tow-in session, we will bring you all of the action LIVE

While we’re all in favor of putting safety first, unfortunately, the news didn’t bode well for some viewers, tweeting back “calling the JAWS Challenge off because the waves are too big and perfect, isn’t that the point of the big wave world tour????”
WSL is a joke, calling the #jawschallenge off because the waves are too big and perfect, isn’t that the point of the big wave world tour????

While the 2018 JAWS Challenge at Peahi, Maui, is off for the today, the next call will be tomorrow morning at 7am HST. World Surf League commissioner Mike Parsons backed the postponement by saying “the conditions aren’t favorable considering the safety of our surfers are number one priority.”
